令人難以置信的深海寶藏:英國藝術家 Damien Hirst 耗費十年編織的海底傳奇

『寶藏』生於無與倫比的存在之中;嚴格來說,由圖像而來的靈感,其所蘊含的豐富性、媒材多樣性與近乎完美的程度,成就了『寶藏』的寫實。

當英國藝術家 Damien Hirst 近期在威尼斯展覽而引發指標性媒體所下的標題「Damien Hirst 在威尼斯發動沈船驚險奇觀」,讀到這裡心底忍不住笑了——若非 Damien Hirst 如此有名,怎會得到這麼強烈的關注?當然,他會被喜歡、受大眾討論也是有原因的,他是少數富有盛名又令我真正感到佩服的藝術家。在威尼斯舉辦的新作展覽《Treasures from the Wreck of the Unbelievable》,是 Damien Hirst 近十年來第一場重大展覽。已經邁入五十歲的他安靜了幾年,他的光環不若當年耀眼;在這個依靠名氣生存的時代,他必須再做點不一樣的作品。雖然如此,Damien Hirst 從不曾缺乏自信——這也是讓人最欣賞的地方。在 Damien Hirst 前往威尼斯時,藝術圈的人們都在猜測他下一步將要做什麼。

Damien Hirst,1965 年出生於英國的布里斯托爾(Bristol),在里茲(Leeds)長大,之後在倫敦的 Goldsmiths 大學學習藝術。當時他策劃一個令人注目的聯展《Freeze》,也拉開那個世代英國藝術家的序幕。他製作了各式各樣的裝置、雕塑、繪畫等作品,探索美與宗教、科學、生命和死亡之間的複雜關係。當然還有最引起大眾討論的鯊魚——《The Physical Impossibility of Death in the Mind of Someone Living》(1991),以及那鑲有 8,601 顆鑽石的骷髏頭,在在都挑戰著當代的信仰。

14 英尺長的虎鯊保存在甲醛裡,以 1200 萬美元出售,這件作品鞏固 Damien Hirst 的藝術地位,但也引起一波關於作品價值與獨創性的爭議。因為即使虎鯊是保存在甲醛中,卻也會隨著時間遭受磨損和退化,並不能真正凍結時間。二來這件作品並非他本人親自動手做成,而是由他的團隊。即使如此多意見,不可否認地,當我們看著鯊魚,它似同時死亡、同時活著——雖然事實上它是死的,但它成了一種令人不安的存在。

我喜歡從一系列的重複中獲得某種安全感,就像如果你把一句話說了兩次,會比說一次更有說服力。我也認為這是一種無窮無盡的暗示,理論上能幫助你避免死亡,這也是為什麼吸菸是如此的性感。除了上癮,吸引人的是,生活中的事情並沒有改變,所有的時間都會發生變化,但你總是可以依靠一種像香菸這樣的東西,這樣一來又一次地標示出你的整個存在。這幾乎就像是你在欺騙死亡,但是,它會殺死你,所以吸菸變得更加性感。人們害怕變化,所以通過重複創造一種信念。

令我真正佩服他的,是 2007 年在倫敦讀到他與策展人 Hans Ulrich Obrist 的對談;上述那段像是閒聊的話,卻從讀到的那一刻起,像是毒藥般植入腦袋,開始無法停止關注他的作品。直到後來才真正意識到他的可怕,讓人不得不認同他所言——他是如此冷靜甚至有些冷酷(雖然我使用的形容詞看似負面,但其實是佩服他的)。就像自從 Damien Hirst 得到 Turner Prize 的肯定後,正反兩面的批評如同相對兩方的潮水力量在互相對抗,人們對他的評價總是又愛又恨,即使如此卻沒辦法阻止他,因為他並不那麼輕易被打倒。

這次的展覽《Treasures from the Wreck of the Unbelievable》主題圍繞在「令人難以置信的沈船寶藏」,包括從印度洋一艘沈船裡撈出來的古代作品。Damien Hirst 斷定這些物品屬於遠久以前的一個奴隸——據說這是來自一個神話,一個在一至二世紀之初的奴隸 Cif Amotan II(也稱 Aulus Calidius Amotan),他是以擁有巨大財富而聞名的傳奇。直到兩千多年後,在印度洋發現了殘骸,其中有 170 件物品的表面已經佈滿了珊瑚、海蟲等自然物。根據神話,珊瑚是在女妖美杜莎所滲出的血液裡誕生,但真正的珊瑚接觸到空氣會變硬,所以目前還有一些文物留在海底等待搶救。儘管水下世界的遺跡還在,但被恢復的物品也還算完整沒有太大的損壞,這些「古代物品」在威尼斯展出——威尼斯作為一個古老的水上城市,表現這些物品似乎再合適不過。

雖然沒有確認這個消息,但顯然 Damien Hirst 投入大量金錢來做這些作品。事實上,這也許是當代藝術家所展示的「最昂貴的展覽」之一。早在 2010 年,有位記者在倫敦採訪他,當時他高興地分享這個計畫:在一艘船上幻想它的沈沒。Damien Hirst 對於古代船隻的殘骸以及這些具有異國情調的「寶藏」,感到興奮異常。這些不僅僅是「寶藏」而已,背後還代表著神話色彩。誰不著迷擁有無限力量的神和英雄?這些在海底找到的古代物品也代表了現實和幻想,就如同我們透過幻想來了解古代的文化。

展覽由超過 190 件作品組成,最大的一件雕像超過 18 米高,幾乎與展覽地點 Palazzo Grassi 同高。可以想見每個參觀者會用多麽驚奇的眼光看它。雕像看起來像青銅製成,但實際上卻是用樹脂。其他作品如熊、獅子、獅身人面像等,被包裹的似乎是珊瑚,但其實也不是珊瑚。這些「海底寶藏」與 Cif Amotan II 的故事究竟是真?是假?雙眼對事實的判定似乎起不了作用,呼應著由英國浪漫主義詩人柯勒律治(Samuel Taylor Coleridge)在 1817 年提出的,當觀眾與讀者面對作品,有時應以「停止懷疑的意願」概念(此概念被藝術與文學界探討逾兩世紀至今),觀看作品。Damien Hirst 則說,這次的展覽可以說是戲弄,因為這一切都是你想要相信的(It’s all about what you want to believe.)。

展覽的核心一如 Damien Hirst 以往的風格,有些戲弄和諷刺,讓觀眾對於真相、幻覺、歷史事實與神話交織而成的懷疑與相信,提出一個個疑問。到底這些作品代表了什麼?從一開始到底是屬於誰的沈船?裡面的寶物是屬於誰的?寶物是真的還是贗品?重新製作後的材料,也不如全然如其表面所似的青銅與水晶,當然也不是真正的珊瑚,那麼我們到底是看進的是誰的幻想裡?

這些疑問卻毫無疑問地讓作品更有魅力。對於從事藝術的人來說,問題和答案從來都不重要,我自己更著迷在這兩者之中的模糊空間;若硬要逼問作者給一個確定的答案,那從他說出口的那刻便已經結束,我們的想像也被迫停止。就像作家在處理文句,平凡的作家只能夠敘述過程,引人入勝的作家則會在文句間創造出跳躍感,引導讀者能夠跟著書寫前進的同時,一邊心跳加快。而對藝術家的寬容,願意跟著他在虛幻和現實中探險,欣賞他的實驗;就像這次收藏家/Palazzo Grassi – Punta della Dogana 主席 Francois Pinault 提供場地與協助,分享他對藝術的激情和身為收藏家的癡迷,讓我們看到 Damien Hirst 依舊寶刀未老,他確實還有新的東西要說。

「我想像一下,在我生命的盡頭,我只想畫畫。我會坐在一個小房間裡,在一個燈泡上畫自畫像。當然,現在我還能夠製作大型的雕塑,但當我越來越老、無法再做大型製作的時候,我會做更小的、可以攜帶的。如果金屬太重也可以使用木頭,我只想變成老人的時候在工作室裡面做小東西。」想起他說的這段話,可能又會成為我下半生的咒語;如此浪漫又執著的一個人,怎麼能不喜歡他呢?

這次在威尼斯的展覽聲勢浩大,吸引許多藝術評論家下筆,雖然媒體在乎的是 Damien Hirst 是否能夠得到評論家的支持,以及他耗費這麼多金錢製作的作品是否能夠得到收藏家的青睞? 他曾說過,在選擇做作品的時候的確是承受著巨大失敗的可能性;如果沒有被接受,下場就是毫不費力的消失。但對於一位藝術家來說,能這樣自由地大量製作作品,是如此過癮的一件事;我很羨慕,也很期待他能進入下一個高峰。
