翻閱書頁,拾起記憶裡的泛黃與留白:藝術家 Ekaterina Panikanova

人類記憶是一種難解而迷人的機制,感官被賦予知覺汲取周遭世界的訊息,轉譯為意識的發展歷程:兒時母親伴床前的綿綿叨絮,泥土軟韌質地散發雨後芳香與濕溽,擁抱戀人深深陷入熱度與氣味的包覆。種種感官經驗遠去後,仍留下似真似幻的餘韻,隨時供我們召喚。即便未曾留心的事物,感知仍會將其納入記憶範疇,安放深處,不輕易鏽蝕、腐朽、消逝,而後在某時某刻受到觸動而如潮漲般湧上。

這種似曾相識的感受我們再熟悉不過,每逢經歷卻仍恍如初見般措手不及,任其將意識翩然抽離、引至遠方。與某物不期而遇所勾起的懷舊情境,彷彿儀式般的召喚。俄國藝術家 Ekaterina Panikanova 從此經驗汲取靈感,以探索兒時回憶為軸,創作《Errata Corrige》作品,並繼續延伸出一系列後續作品,邀請觀者藉由閱讀潛意識的世界來了解自我。珍珠誕生自牡蠣容納砂礫的劇烈痛苦,這段過程啟發了 Ekaterina Panikanova 探索情感的觸發如何召喚出童年圖像的記憶、創傷與經驗——連結了每個人生活所承載的共通經驗。

自聖彼得堡藝術學院畢業後,一日 Ekaterina Panikanova 漫步於跳蚤市場,偶然發現一件厚達 700 頁的手稿,成了創作契機。她企圖直接介入翻開的書頁,在視覺上重寫人類心靈深處的故事。越過歲月的書籍沾染塵埃與污漬,交錯成微小而富表現力的細節,激發強烈印象。

存在其中的原始用途與隨時間變化的差異令我震驚,我買下它,將它用在創作上。紙、卡片和書籍,在我的作品中具有十分重要的價值,我視它們為規則、教條、傳統、宗教信念,以及科學發現的集合體。

Ekaterina Panikanova 以黑色墨水繪出乍看尋常的象徵圖像,從看似謬誤的圖案間捕捉若有似無的幽默:「我用鹿角作為動物本能的比喻,派作為傳統的象徵;燃燒的清澈火焰象徵著人類可看見自身、溫暖自己。稠密濃厚的黑煙則代表獨裁、審查與遮蔽。」無論意涵所指,自圖像擴散的靜謐懷舊氛圍更為悠長,恍惚間將意識帶往那遙遠又熟悉的已知或未知。

蒐集來自不同時代的書籍、筆記本和印刷品,Ekaterina Panikanova 將其拼排為大小相異網格,編織成彼此呼應又斷裂的凹凸格狀。書籍被隔為一組組區塊,如拼圖般,似乎可相互置換,同時也存在強烈的依賴關係——要與其他書籍一同拼組,才是完整的畫面——貼切闡述人類經驗與記憶的整體由片段組構,進而貫穿我們的生活。

 

「我的工作有如生活的隱喻,文本無法刪除;但如果你願意,可以選擇翻到下一頁。我不喜歡在最後將作品固定,而是試圖創造動態。每日生活以過去支撐著,現在與未來皆受到過去的強烈束縛。」於是,作品三維立體的面貌就此展現,巧妙迴避繪畫的制式規範。書籍擺放於帆布上豎起,將時間、空間,二維、三維向度的隔閡鎔鑄。繪有圖像的書頁之下,更多是隱而不顯的文字、圖像與記憶,指涉人類的層層意識——浮現的僅有表面,掩蓋其下是逕自延伸的龐大片段,柔軟的包裹著逝去童年。

另一角度來看,她延續《Errata Corrige》的創作概念——精神分析對潛意識的探索,與超現實主義的物象錯置手法,通過任意改變物體的所處環境,同時改變了其與周圍事物間的關係並與某物進行接合,於是物體的原有意義被抽離,使人們可以一新的角度審視之,獲得不同以往的認識和理解。畫面的人物和動物肖像予以任意置換——頭部以鹿角、蛋糕取代,面對充滿趣味與奇想的圖案躍入遺忘已久的童年時光,如同閱讀書籍時懸浮想像中的角色與情節。「我閱讀內文並選擇跨頁繪製插圖,再根據心中構想將書籍並置如拼圖。遊戲和戲劇是作品中同等重要的組成元素,訴說著關於個人心理層面的記憶與發展故事。」

凝視作品時,即便書籍本為獨立個體,大腦總會透過視覺映出的影像,依循邏輯建構出日常熟悉的圖像。書頁上本不相干的圖案在大腦運作下,將一切串聯、重塑成易於理解的模樣。然理性機制與潛意識兩者本質背道而馳,是否藝術家對觀者大腦、對邏輯開了個玩笑呢?

 

留白縫隙埋怨著真實記憶之外原來有那麼多的空洞,人們移花接木地將某段時空拼湊成形,卻總顯得有些勉強,凸顯記憶的疏漏與殘缺。倘若意識之下的領域無須依憑理性,何不輕鬆地看待錯置圖像的荒謬,強烈且破碎,真實而模糊,更加貼近記憶的生成與積累。泛黃紙質與黑色線條編寫記憶如鬼魅般的面貌,建構通向潛意識的生動旅程,一面探尋、一面凸顯關於人類存在,最深奧而模糊晦澀的根源地帶。

泛黃書頁飄浮著時光與意識的朦朧交界,回憶被留在另一邊,時光已靜悄悄邁開步伐前進。與某物的不期而遇,或許是從中窺見停駐過去的自己,在不斷逝去的浮光掠影與當下間擺盪,讓觀者從意識縫隙逃逸出去。
