隨著時代發展,我們所在的城市空間以及社會風貌不斷地變遷。要想抓住當下,攝影或許是如今最便利、簡單的手法。然而澳洲藝術家 Joshua Smith,卻選擇了製作微縮模型、如此工序繁複的方式表達;Joshua 並不是第一個以此為媒介的藝術家,但卻因其所切入的創作觀點、細膩的作工而受到矚目。微縮世界之所以讓人著迷,或許在於藉由比例的縮放,轉換了看待世界的視角,讓觀者得以跳脫真實的處境;彷彿跌入兔子洞一般,挖掘出一個奇妙的小人國世界。又或者,這樣的觀看呼應著 1987 年撰寫太空文章的作家 Frank White 所提出的「Overview Effect」(總觀效應)——當宇航員自太空看著地球,位在高度的視角轉換著對世界原有的認知;而當我們看著微縮世界,在極細微中拉出了觀看的「高度」,自覺自身巨大的同時,卻也反思著在其他「巨大」面前,我們也是如此微小。

Joshua 早其投入模板噴漆藝術(stencil art,塗鴉藝術的一種技巧,運用紙張、紙板或其他媒材切出圖案或文字,而後噴漆於牆面或物體表面),想起 stencil art 與街頭藝術的淵源,或許能隱約明白他如何對在時間流逝中變遷、消耗的城市建築樣貌產生興趣。他在此之前也曾在阿德萊德經營了四年的畫廊,協助當地與其他國家的藝術家策展。2015 年關閉藝廊後,Joshua 將重心轉移,自從前跑遍城市各角落的觀察裡擷取經驗,自學成材,成為以微縮模型創作的藝術家。
